IMD issues multi-state alert as a western disturbance set to bring snow, hail and widespread rain from Jan 26
A new western disturbance is expected to trigger a spell of unsettled weather across parts of north, northwest and central India from January 26, with the peak impact likely around January 27.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for a broad weather shift beginning January 26, 2026, as a fresh western disturbance is forecast to move across northern and adjoining regions. The system is expected to bring a mix of heavy snowfall in higher reaches, along with hailstorms, thunderstorms and spells of widespread rainfall in several states.
According to the outlook, the intensity is expected to build and become most pronounced around January 27, when the heaviest snow and more frequent hail activity are likely in vulnerable pockets. Strong, gusty winds may accompany the storms, raising the risk of poor visibility, tree fall, and disruptions to road and air travel.
The IMD has also highlighted that dense fog and cold-wave conditions may continue in some parts through January 26, before the disturbance fully dominates the weather pattern. As temperatures and winds fluctuate during the transition, commuters may face sudden changes in conditions over short distances, especially in the plains.
Authorities and travellers are being advised to monitor local forecasts closely, plan journeys with buffers, and stay prepared for delays due to fog, snowfall-related roadblocks, and weather-related diversions. Coastal and marine advisories may also come into play where rough seas or strong winds are expected, potentially affecting ferry services and small craft operations.
If the system weakens on schedule, conditions should begin easing from January 28, 2026, though some stormy weather may persist even after the peak. For many regions, the next few days are expected to test preparedness for winter hazards, especially where hail and heavy rain can damage crops or create localised flooding and traffic snarls.
