Republic Day 2026: India marks 77th year with Kartavya Path parade, EU leaders attend as chief guests

India observed its 77th Republic Day on Monday, January 26, 2026, with the flagship celebrations held on Kartavya Path in New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu presided over the ceremonial proceedings, while the parade brought together marching contingents, military hardware, aerial displays and cultural performances representing the country’s diversity.

This year’s celebrations carried an additional diplomatic spotlight: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa were present as chief guests, a rare joint representation by two senior EU leaders at the Republic Day parade. Their attendance comes just ahead of the India–EU summit scheduled for January 27, underlining a push to deepen cooperation in trade and strategic areas.

The parade remained a blend of ceremony and messaging. Military columns highlighted modernisation and preparedness, while the cultural segment showcased dance and thematic tableaux designed to reflect India’s heritage and contemporary aspirations. Many programmes featured flag-hoisting ceremonies, school and college cultural events, and commemorations focused on the Constitution’s role in shaping India’s democratic institutions since it came into effect on January 26, 1950.

With the India–EU summit following immediately after the parade, analysts expect the symbolism of the day to carry over into policy discussions, especially on economic ties, supply chains, technology collaboration and the broader geopolitical alignment between India and Europe.
