Republic Day 2026: India’s Kartavya Path parade spotlights military hardware, cultural tableaux and EU leaders as chief guests
India marked its 77th Republic Day on Monday with a packed Kartavya Path parade in New Delhi, blending a show of domestic defence capability with state tableaux, folk performances and a closing air force flypast. European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attended as chief guests alongside India’s top leadership.
NEW DELHI: India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on Monday (January 26, 2026) with a grand parade along Kartavya Path, the capital’s ceremonial boulevard lined with lawns and waterways. Thousands gathered to watch the march-past and pageantry commemorating the Constitution coming into force on January 26, 1950.
The parade mixed ceremonial precision with a pointed message of capability and self-reliance. Columns from the military and paramilitary forces marched with bands, while domestically produced platforms rolled by in formation—tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, mobile radar systems and missile units—under tight security arrangements across the city.
A centrepiece of the spectacle was the cultural showcase. Dance troupes in vivid regional costumes performed along the route, and floats highlighted India’s diversity and state-level themes, turning the boulevard into a moving gallery of traditions, crafts and contemporary development priorities.
The event also carried a diplomatic spotlight. Visiting European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen attended as chief guests, joining India’s president and prime minister during the formal proceedings and observing the national salute and the parade’s major segments.
The finale featured a flypast by Indian Air Force aircraft, including fighter jets and transport planes, sealing the day’s blend of ceremony and symbolism. Republic Day parades and flag-hoisting events were also held in state capitals and major cities across the country, with heightened checks and restrictions in sensitive areas.
Republic Day remains India’s most prominent annual civic-military ceremony, marking the nation’s constitutional identity while projecting the twin narratives of national unity and operational readiness.
