IMD flags fresh western disturbance as rain, snow and cold-wave conditions spread across north India

A new spell of winter weather begins

India’s winter pattern is turning active again from Tuesday, 27 January 2026, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rain and snowfall over the western Himalayan region, and unsettled conditions spreading into several north and central Indian plains. The trigger is a fresh western disturbance moving in from the west, a common driver of late-January precipitation in the Himalayas and adjoining regions.

The IMD bulletin points to snowfall and rain across higher reaches, while lower elevations and plains may see spells of rain, thunderstorms and lightning, along with gusty winds. In isolated pockets, dense fog is also likely—raising the risk of travel delays on roads and at transport hubs during morning and late-night hours.

Cold-wave risk and local disruptions

Alongside precipitation, the IMD has warned of cold-wave and cold-day conditions in parts of the northern plains. Such conditions can worsen overnight chill, affect vulnerable populations, and reduce visibility on highways. In mountain districts, fresh snow can lead to temporary road closures and increased avalanche risk on exposed slopes.

Residents and travellers are advised to track local forecasts, factor in reduced visibility during fog, and plan for slower commutes. People in high-altitude areas should also stay alert to local advisories linked to snowfall, strong winds and route accessibility.

Another disturbance likely later this week

The IMD has also indicated that another bout of unsettled weather may arrive later in the week, with a new western disturbance expected to influence northwest India around 30 January. If it materialises, conditions could remain changeable, especially across hill states and the adjoining plains.
