Government calls all-party meeting on Jan 27 ahead of Budget Session starting Jan 28; Budget due Feb 1

The Union government is convening an all-party meeting of floor leaders on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, as a prelude to the Budget Session of Parliament, which begins on 28 January. The meeting is intended to smoothen coordination on legislative business, discuss key national issues likely to come up during the session, and set expectations on debates and scheduling across both Houses.

The Budget Session is among the most consequential on the parliamentary calendar because it includes the presentation and passage of the Union Budget and related financial business. The Union Budget for 2026-27 is scheduled to be presented on 1 February 2026. The session is also set to commence formally with the President of India addressing members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

As per the proposed calendar cited in reports, the Budget Session will run until 2 April with a break in between, split into two phases. Beyond the Budget itself, the session typically sees extensive scrutiny of allocations, tax proposals and policy signals, along with debates over macroeconomic priorities such as growth, inflation management, welfare spending and capital expenditure.

For opposition parties, the all-party meeting offers a chance to flag issues they want taken up during the session, including governance concerns, economic pressures on households and sector-specific disruptions. For the government, it is an opportunity to seek cooperation to ensure the smooth functioning of the Houses and timely passage of financial business, which is time-bound.

The build-up to the Budget has also renewed attention on trade policy and customs duties, with the Finance Ministry highlighting earlier adjustments as part of the broader ‘Make in India’ push and efforts to support domestic manufacturing. The all-party meeting is expected to set the tone for how combative—or cooperative—the Budget Session will be when it opens the next day.
