Fever cases spike in Thiruvananthapuram; dengue and leptospirosis flagged in hotspots

Thiruvananthapuram district reported a surge in fever cases from January 1 to 22, 2026, with over 11,000 people seeking treatment. Officials confirmed leptospirosis and dengue among multiple illnesses tracked, including one death linked to leptospirosis and two dengue-related deaths. Authorities have intensified surveillance and vector-control efforts in identified hotspot localities.

More than 11,000 seek treatment in three weeks

Thiruvananthapuram district has recorded a sharp rise in fever cases, with more than 11,000 people seeking treatment between January 1 and January 22, 2026, according to health officials. Over 160 patients were reported to be undergoing treatment in government hospitals for fever-related illnesses during this period.

The Directorate of Health Services data cited by officials shows that multiple infections are being monitored at the same time, raising the pressure on surveillance, testing capacity and field-level prevention work—especially in densely populated areas where sanitation and waterlogging issues can accelerate spread.

Leptospirosis and dengue: cases and deaths reported

Officials said 27 people sought treatment for leptospirosis during the period, with 17 cases confirmed and one death reported. Dengue symptoms were reported by 269 people, with 92 cases confirmed and 177 treated as suspected. The district also recorded two dengue-related deaths, underscoring that severe outcomes continue to occur even when case numbers are a fraction of the total fever load.

Alongside these, officials reported other illnesses since the start of the year: acute diarrhoeal disease, chickenpox, scrub typhus, influenza, hepatitis A and a malaria case—highlighting that ‘fever’ presentations can represent multiple diseases requiring different public-health responses.

Hotspots identified; vector control stepped up

Health authorities identified hotspots including Nanthancode, Veli, Muttada, Chalai, Attukal, Karakulam, Vattiyoorkavu, Vellarada and Vilappil. In response, surveillance and vector-control measures were intensified, along with awareness campaigns urging people to remove stagnant water, maintain hygiene and seek early medical care for persistent fever.

Officials also flagged concern about leptospirosis risk, noting that Leptospira bacteria were detected in cattle in addition to rodents. The veterinary department has been asked to strengthen surveillance, and coordinated containment measures are under way. Sanitation challenges and rodent infestations were cited as continuing risks in some urban pockets.

Weather patterns add to dengue risk

Health officials warned that erratic rainfall—intermittent rain followed by dry spells—can lead to water stagnation in drains and containers, creating favourable breeding conditions for mosquitoes and potentially driving higher dengue transmission. The district’s focus now is on rapid reporting, prevention and timely treatment to limit severe outcomes.

For residents, the immediate public-health advice remains practical: eliminate standing water, use mosquito protection, and consult a doctor early for fever—especially if symptoms worsen or persist beyond a couple of days.
