DRDO showcases high-power microwave directed-energy system aimed at countering drone swarms

A new counter-drone concept from DRDO
India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has unveiled a model of a high-power microwave (HPM) directed-energy weapon system being developed to counter swarms of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The system is positioned as a counter-UAS capability, intended to disable multiple drones by targeting their electronics rather than relying on conventional kinetic interceptors.

As reported, the prototype is a product of DRDO’s Microwave Tube Research and Development Centre (MTRDC) in Bengaluru. A scale model was showcased during the 2026 International Conference on Electronic Warfare (EWCI) held from 20–22 January 2026, organised by the India chapter of the Association of Old Crows (AOC).
Development timeline and early testing claims
A project member cited in the report said the HPM effort began in 2019 and that the system is currently in trials and testing. The same source indicated the prototype has disabled small quadcopter commercial UAVs—such as DJI Phantom-type drones—at ranges of up to around 1 km, suggesting an initial envelope focused on smaller targets typical of low-cost drone threats.
Why directed energy is being explored
The growing use of drones for reconnaissance, disruption and potential attacks has pushed militaries worldwide to explore layered air-defence options. High-power microwave systems are often discussed as one approach for tackling swarm scenarios where multiple low-cost drones can overwhelm traditional point defences.
If matured beyond prototype stage, such a system could complement jammers, net-based capture tools and short-range interceptors—especially around sensitive installations where rapid, repeatable engagements against multiple targets are a priority.
